You ask
What is bomba?
We answerOne of Puerto Rico's oldest living traditions of music and dance. It was born on the island's sugar plantations more than three centuries ago, created by enslaved Africans and their descendants, and it is still played and danced across the island today.
-
You ask
Who leads?
We answerThe dancer. She challenges the primo, the lead drum, and the drummer answers every move. Bomba is a conversation, and you'll be close enough to follow it.
-
You ask
Why see it here?
We answerOur founding season brings bomba to a small stage at El Bastión, an artists' space on the grounds of Museo Casa Blanca in Old San Juan. Four musicians, a dancer and a host who explains what you're hearing, in English.
One hour.
Three moves.
Live, close and easy to follow, whether this is your first bomba or your fiftieth.
Feel the drums
Barriles, maracas and the cuá, played live by Puerto Rican musicians. Close enough to feel in your chest.
Hear the story
